"You are the God who sees me." (Genesis 16:13)
Have you ever wondered if God sees what you're carrying?
Maybe you've prayed the same prayer over and over, hoping something would change. Maybe life hasn't unfolded the way you imagined, and you're left wondering where God is in the middle of it all.
If you've ever felt unseen, forgotten, or alone, you're not the first.
One of the most powerful stories in Scripture belongs to a woman many people overlook: Hagar.
Hagar's Story
Hagar's life wasn't easy. She found herself caught in circumstances she didn't choose, treated unfairly, and eventually sent into the wilderness with her young son.
Imagine the fear she must have felt.
The uncertainty.
The loneliness.
She had no map for the future and very little hope for tomorrow.
Yet what happened next changed everything.
God met her in the wilderness.
Not after she had everything figured out.
Not after her circumstances improved.
Right there, in the middle of her pain.
God spoke to her, comforted her, and reminded her that He had not forgotten her.
In response, Hagar gave God a remarkable name:
El Roi, "the God who sees me."
What a beautiful reminder that even when life feels empty, God is fully present.
Sometimes We Don't Recognize God's Care Until We Look Back
One of the hardest parts of walking with God is that we often don't see what He's doing in the moment.
We see unanswered prayers.
He sees preparation.
We see delays.
He sees protection.
We see closed doors.
He sees a better path.
Looking back over our lives often reveals countless moments where God was quietly providing, guiding, protecting, and strengthening us, even when we couldn't recognize it at the time.
His faithfulness is often easier to trace in the rearview mirror than through the windshield.
A Journal Prompt for Today
Take a few quiet minutes with your journal and honestly answer this question:
How has God cared for me when I couldn't see Him working?
As you write, consider these questions:
What prayers has God answered that I almost forgot about?
When did God provide in an unexpected way?
What difficult season eventually produced growth in my life?
Where can I now see God's fingerprints on my story?
Don't rush.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit reminds us of blessings we've overlooked.
Your Wilderness Is Not Wasted
Hagar's wilderness wasn't the end of her story.
It became the place where she experienced God in a deeply personal way.
Your difficult season doesn't define you either.
The place that feels lonely today may become the testimony you share tomorrow.
If you're in a wilderness season, remember this:
God sees you.
God knows your name.
God hears your prayers.
And even if you can't see Him working today, He has not stopped working on your behalf.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being the God who sees me. Thank You for meeting me in every wilderness season, even when I don't recognize Your presence right away. Open my eyes to remember the ways You have cared for me throughout my life. Strengthen my faith to trust You even when I cannot see the whole picture. Help me rest in the truth that I am never forgotten because I am fully known and deeply loved by You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
