"So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

When we think of courage, we often picture someone fearless. Someone who never doubts, never hesitates, and never feels afraid.

But the Bible paints a different picture.

Some of God's greatest servants experienced fear, uncertainty, and impossible circumstances. Yet they chose to obey God anyway.

One of the clearest examples is Esther.

Her story isn't just about becoming a queen. It's about an ordinary young woman whom God placed in an extraordinary position for a purpose far greater than she could have imagined.

If you've ever felt unqualified, overlooked, or afraid to step into what God is calling you to do, Esther's story is for you.

God Often Prepares You Before You Understand Why

Esther's journey began long before she wore a crown.

She was a young Jewish woman who had lost both of her parents and was raised by her cousin, Mordecai. From the outside, her life may have seemed ordinary, but God was quietly working behind the scenes.

When King Ahasuerus began searching for a new queen, Esther was chosen.

At the time, she couldn't have known why.

Looking back, we can see what Esther could not.

God was positioning her before the crisis ever came.

The same is often true in our lives.

There are seasons that feel ordinary, even confusing. We may wonder why God has opened one door while closing another. Later, we often realize He was preparing us for something we couldn't yet see.

Even when His plan isn't obvious, His hand is still at work.

Courage Doesn't Mean You Aren't Afraid

One of the most inspiring moments in Esther's story comes after Haman plots to destroy the Jewish people.

Mordecai challenges Esther to speak to the king, reminding her that perhaps she has come to the kingdom "for such a time as this."

There was just one problem.

Approaching the king without being invited could mean death.

Esther knew the risk.

She didn't pretend it wasn't frightening.

Instead, she called for a time of fasting and prayer before taking the next step.

Real courage isn't pretending fear doesn't exist.

It's choosing faith even while fear is knocking at the door.

God Uses Ordinary People

Esther wasn't a prophet.

She wasn't a military leader.

She wasn't known for performing miracles.

She was simply willing to obey when God gave her the opportunity.

Throughout Scripture, God consistently chooses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

Moses doubted himself.

Gideon questioned whether he was capable.

David was overlooked by nearly everyone.

Peter made countless mistakes.

Yet God used each one.

Your ability is never more important than your availability.

God delights in working through people who are willing to trust Him.

Prayer Comes Before Boldness

Before Esther acted, she prayed.

She asked others to fast alongside her.

She understood that courage wasn't something she had to manufacture on her own.

It flowed from dependence on God.

Sometimes we try to face life's biggest challenges with our own strength.

God invites us to begin somewhere different.

Before the conversation.

Before the decision.

Before the next step.

Pray.

Prayer doesn't always remove the challenge, but it reminds us who walks with us through it.

Your Obedience Can Bless Others

Esther's decision didn't affect only her own life.

Her courage helped save an entire nation.

Most acts of obedience have ripple effects we never fully see.

The kind word you offer.

The prayer you faithfully pray.

The invitation you extend.

The forgiveness you choose.

The truth you lovingly speak.

God often uses simple acts of faithfulness to impact far more people than we realize.

Never underestimate what God can do through one obedient heart.

God Is Always Working Behind the Scenes

One of the most remarkable things about the book of Esther is that God's name is never directly mentioned.

Yet His fingerprints are everywhere.

The timing of events.

The unexpected opportunities.

The seemingly ordinary moments that become extraordinary.

Again and again, we see God's providence quietly unfolding.

There may be seasons when God feels silent.

That doesn't mean He is absent.

The same God who guided Esther is still working in your life today, even when you cannot yet see the full picture.

What Courage Looks Like Today

Most of us will never stand before a king like Esther did.

But we are called to courage in everyday life.

Courage may look like:

  • Trusting God during an uncertain season.

  • Speaking truth with kindness.

  • Forgiving someone who hurt you.

  • Beginning something God has placed on your heart.

  • Standing firm in your faith when it's unpopular.

  • Sharing the hope you've found in Christ.

  • Choosing obedience over comfort.

These moments may seem small, but they are often where faith grows the most.

A Simple Challenge

This week, ask yourself:

Where is God inviting me to take one courageous step?

It doesn't have to be dramatic.

Perhaps it's making a difficult phone call.

Starting that Bible study.

Apologizing.

Serving someone quietly.

Praying for a friend.

Take the next faithful step and trust God with what comes after.

Remember, courage grows one act of obedience at a time.

Reflection Questions

Spend a few moments journaling your thoughts:

  1. What fears have been holding me back from obeying God?

  2. Is there an area where I sense God asking me to trust Him more deeply?

  3. How has God prepared me through past experiences?

  4. What does courage look like in my current season of life?

  5. What is one step of faith I can take this week?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of Esther and for reminding me that You often use ordinary people for extraordinary purposes. When fear threatens to keep me from following You, help me remember that Your presence goes before me.

Give me courage to trust You even when I cannot see the outcome. Strengthen my faith, guide my decisions, and help me choose obedience over comfort.

Teach me to rely on You through prayer and to believe that You are working behind the scenes, even when I cannot see what You are doing.

May my life reflect confidence in Your goodness and faithfulness.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
