5 Simple Ways to Start a Prayer Journal
Have you ever sat down with a beautiful notebook, a fresh pen, and every intention of starting a prayer journal only to stare at a blank page wondering what to write?
You're not alone.
I love journaling now, but when I first started, I thought I needed some elaborate system with color-coded sections, fancy handwriting, and deep spiritual insights every single day.
The truth is that a prayer journal doesn't have to be perfect to be powerful.
A prayer journal is simply a place where you meet with God.
Some days you'll write pages. Some days you'll write a single sentence. Some days you'll pour out your heart, and other days you'll simply write a verse that spoke to you.
The important thing isn't how much you write.
The important thing is showing up.
If you've been wanting to start a prayer journal but aren't sure where to begin, here are five simple ways to get started.
1. Start With a Simple Conversation
One of the easiest mistakes to make is thinking your prayer journal has to sound spiritual.
It doesn't.
Talk to God the same way you would talk to someone who loves you deeply.
Tell Him about your day.
Tell Him what you're worried about.
Tell Him what you're excited about.
Tell Him what made you laugh.
Tell Him what made you cry.
Some of my journal entries look more like letters than prayers.
They begin with:
"Dear Lord, today was hard."
Or:
"Jesus, I don't know what I'm doing right now."
Or:
"Thank You for the little blessing I didn't expect today."
Prayer journaling is not about sounding impressive.
It's about being honest.
2. Write Down Scripture That Speaks to You
Sometimes we don't know what to say, but God's Word always has something to say.
When you come across a verse that stands out to you, write it down.
Then write a few thoughts underneath it.
Ask yourself:
What does this verse teach me about God?
What does this verse teach me about myself?
How can I apply this today?
One verse can become an entire conversation with God.
Over time, your journal becomes a collection of promises, encouragement, and reminders of God's faithfulness.
3. Keep a Running Prayer List
Life gets busy.
Sometimes we pray for something and completely forget we asked God about it.
A prayer list helps us stay focused.
Create simple categories such as:
Family
Friends
Finances
Health
Spiritual Growth
Special Requests
As God answers prayers, go back and write the date beside them.
There is something incredibly encouraging about looking back months later and seeing all the ways God has been working behind the scenes.
Sometimes the answers are exactly what we prayed for.
Sometimes they're completely different.
But they are always worth remembering.
4. Record Your Gratitude
One of the fastest ways to change your perspective is to focus on what God has already done.
Try writing down three things you're thankful for each day.
They don't have to be big things.
Some days your list might include:
A good cup of coffee
A text from a friend
A beautiful sunset
A butterfly crossing your path
A prayer that was answered
When we start looking for God's goodness, we begin seeing it everywhere.
The more gratitude you record, the more evidence you collect of His faithfulness.
5. Don't Worry About Doing It Perfectly
This may be the most important tip of all.
Your prayer journal does not need to be Instagram-worthy.
Your handwriting doesn't need to be beautiful.
You don't need special supplies.
You don't need a perfect routine.
You don't even need to journal every day.
A prayer journal is not about creating a masterpiece.
It's about creating a meeting place.
Think about a caterpillar before it becomes a butterfly.
The process is messy.
Growth takes time.
Transformation doesn't happen overnight.
Your prayer life grows the same way.
One conversation at a time.
One prayer at a time.
One journal entry at a time.
What Happens When You Keep Going
One of my favorite things about prayer journaling is looking back through old entries.
I get to see prayers I forgot I prayed.
I get to see fears that God carried me through.
I get to see blessings I never expected.
I get to see growth that I couldn't see in the moment.
Sometimes we don't realize how far God has brought us until we look behind us.
A prayer journal becomes a written testimony of God's faithfulness.
It tells the story of where you've been and reminds you that God was present through all of it.
A Simple Prayer Journal Prompt
If you're not sure how to begin today, start here:
Lord, what do You want me to know about You today?
Then sit quietly.
Open your Bible.
Write down what you learn.
It really can be that simple.
Final Thoughts
If you've been waiting for the perfect time to start a prayer journal, this is your sign to begin.
Grab a notebook.
Grab a pen.
Open your heart.
You don't need perfect words.
You don't need a perfect system.
You simply need a willing heart and a God who loves hearing from His children.
Years from now, those pages may become one of your favorite reminders of how faithful God has been through every season of your life.
One prayer at a time.
